How it works

The target is a maximum in bytes, and 1 KB is counted as 1,000 bytes. A 200 KB target means at most 200,000 bytes. The result panel shows the exact byte count.
By default the tool keeps the pixel dimensions and searches for the highest JPEG or WebP quality that fits. It does not guarantee the picture will look good at a small target.
Under More limits you can also set a minimum size, a maximum width or height, and the output format. The size shown is read back from the finished file, not assumed from the settings.
A minimum size is only met if the picture really compresses to that many bytes. The tool never pads a file to reach it.
Allowing fewer pixels is off unless you turn it on, so the picture keeps its size by default.
If even the lowest quality tried is still too large, the result is marked as not reached, with the number of bytes over the limit. Allow fewer pixels or resize, then try again. Do not upload a file that missed the limit.
It accepts JPEG and WebP. Convert a PNG to JPEG first. For a PDF, use the PDF compressor.

Some targets aren't achievable without changing dimensions — the tool says so instead of faking it.

Can it compress a PNG?: Not directly. Convert the PNG to JPEG first with the format converter.
What is the difference between KB and MB?: See the KB and MB guide. Portals do not always say which definition they use, so leave a small margin.
What if the target is too small?: The tool reports that it cannot reach it at the current dimensions. You can allow fewer pixels under More limits, or resize the image, and try again.
I have a lot of images to compress — do I have to do them one at a time?: No — use Batch compress images to compress several at once, with a different target for any file that needs one.
